Anwar’s sodomy verdict on February 10

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's fate will be known on February 10, as the Federal Court decides on his sodomy appeal. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, January 26, 2015.Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will know the verdict of his sodomy appeal on February 10, the Federal Court registry said via Twitter today.On January 10, Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria said a notice would be sent to parties at least two weeks before the court delivered its judgment.Arifin led a five-man bench to hear the appeal which started on October 28 and ended on November 7.Arifin was previously quoted by Bernama as saying while judges were expected to complete their decision within three months, the Court of Appeal and Federal Court may take up to six months, if a case was complex.On March 7, the Court of Appeal overturned the January 9, 2012 High Court decision in acquitting Anwar on a charge of sodomising his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.He committed the offence at a unit of the Desa Damansara condominium in Bukit Damansara, between 3.10pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008.The three-member Court of Appeal panel chaired by Datuk Balia Yusof Wahi sentenced Anwar to five years of jail, but granted him a stay on the sentence pending his appeal to the Federal Court.Anwar is now on RM10,000 bail in one surety.The prosecution also filed a cross appeal to enhance his jail term which could be up to 20 years.Anwar's political career as an elected representative will end as he will be disqualified from office if fined more than RM2,000 or jailed more than a year and has not received a free pardon. – January 26, 2015.

Is Putrajaya still bound by RM165 million NS job to Umno man’s firm, PKR asks

PKR Youth Wing strategy director Akmal Nasir seeks answers about the company that provides bus services to NS participants, with a contract worth RM165 million. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 26, 2015.PKR has asked whether the recently announced suspension of the National Service would affect a RM165 million transport contract given to a company linked to an Umno leader.Its youth wing strategy director, Akmal Nasir said Gunung Capital Berhad was awarded the contract through its subsidiary GPB Corporation Sdn Bhd last December."I revealed last week that there was RM212 million in difference as the savings announced by the prime minister with the deferral of NS for 2015 was RM400 million, when the actual cost of the programme as announced in the 2015 Budget was RM612 million," he said in a statement today."Does this mean that the government stands to lose RM212 million because it still has to pay contractor companies like Gunung Capital which has been awarded the RM165 million contract although NS for 2015 has been suspended?"He also asked if this was the reason Putrajaya refused to abolish the NS programme altogether as suggested by many parties including education lobbyists."Is the government's refusal to abolish NS because certain companies linked to Umno leaders were promised contracts worth millions for the long term or contracts that are more than a year?"Akmal said the contract given to Gunung Capital includes 416 buses for 82 NS camps for a period of three years beginning December 26, 2014 to December 25, 2017, but noted that it was not clear how the contract was awarded and if the value was on par with the service provided."This brings up a lot of questions, because information provided shows that Gunung Capital is led by an Umno leader – Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal – as the executive chairman and chief executive officer of the company."He is also the Bukit Gantang Umno division chief, who is active in Perak," he added.Last week, Akmal urged Putrajaya to abolish the NS altogether instead of suspending it only for this year, as the RM400 million annual fee could be spent elsewhere.He said Putrajaya had spent RM5,283 on each of the 832,712 trainees undergoing the programme since February 16, 2004.“The RM400 million amounts to around one-fourth or one-fifth of the annual National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) loan. It could provide RM15,000 study loans to 25,000 university students each year," he said.Akmal said today the suspension of NS training was a good way to reduce government expenditure, but added that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak ought to explain why it could save 65% of the estimated expenses of the programme."Does this mean the government will pay companies like Gunung Capital RM165 million although no bus service will be provided for 2015? And what has happened to the RM212 remainder of the estimated expenses?" he asked. – January 26, 2015.

(24 ม.ค.) ร.ต.ต.ยุทธศิลป์ สิงหาด ร้อยเวรสถานีตำรวจภูธรมะขาม ได้รับแจ้งว่า เกิดอุบัติเหตุรถยนต์กระบะเสียหลักพุ่งชนเสาไฟส่องสว่างข้างทาง บนถนนสายบ้านแตงเม สามแยกวังแซ้ม หมู่ที่ 2 ตำบลวังแซ้ม อำเภอมะขาม จังหวัดจันทบุรี ในที่เกิดเหตุมีผู้เสียชีวิต 1 ราย และบาดเจ็บสาหัส 1 ราย จึงรุดไปที่เกิดเหตุพร้อมด้วยเจ้าหน้าที่อาสาหน่วยกู้ภัยสมาคมสว่างกตัญญูธรรมสถานจันทบุรี

พบรถยนต์กระบะมิตซูบิชิ สีม่วง หมายเลขทะเบียน บบ 1852 จันทบุรี อยู่ในสภาพพุ่งชนอัดก๊อบปี้กับโคนเสาไฟส่องสว่างพังเสียหาย พบศพ นายวิชิต ไชยพงษ์ อายุ 48 ปี เสียชีวิตอยู่บนเบาะที่นั่งคนขับ ส่วนผู้ได้รับบาดเจ็บทราบชื่อคือ นางบรรจง หาผล อายุ 46 ปี เป็นภรรยาของนาย วิชิต ถูกนำตัวส่งโรงพยาบาลมะขาม

จากการสอบสวน ตำรวจระบุว่า ตรวจสอบจุดเกิดเหตุไม่พบว่ามีคู่กรณี คาดว่าผู้เสียชีวิตขับรถเสียหลักเอง คาดว่าน่าจะหลับในก่อนเสียหลักพุ่งชนกับเสาไฟฟ้าส่องสว่างข้างทางดังกล่าว ซึ่งในเบื้องต้น ทางเจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจจะได้สอบสวนหาสาเหตุที่แท้จริงต่อไป

ขณะเดียวกัน นายวัชรพล ไชยพงษ์ อายุ 24 ปี หนึ่งในทีมเจ้าหน้าที่กู้ภัยสมาคมสว่างกตัญญูธรรมสถาน จันทบุรี ที่มาร่วมให้การช่วยเหลืออุบัติเหตุครั้งนี้ ต้องพบกับความสะเทือนใจ เนื่องจากเป็นลูกชายของนายวิชิต ผู้เสียชีวิต และนางบรรจง ผู้บาดเจ็บ โดยนายวัชรพงษ์ยังคงปฏิบัติหน้าที่กู้ภัย ช่วยนำศพพ่อออกมาจากซากรถ พร้อมหลั่งน้ำตาร่ำไห้ ก้มกราบศพพ่อ ก่อนนำร่างไร้วิญญาณส่งโรงพยาบาล ให้แพทย์ตรวจวินิจฉัยยืนยันการเสียชีวิตต่อไป

'Pemain badminton perlu manfaat peluang'

Bekas pemain badminton kebangsaan Datuk Teh Kew San menggesa pemain muda supaya memanfaatkan peluang sedia ada serta perlu mengubah pemikiran bagi meningkatkan prestasi sukan badminton negara.

Beliau berkata mereka perlu meningkatkan stamina untuk bergerak seiring dengan pemain antarabangsa kerana corak permainan kini banyak berubah dan semakin pantas jika dibandingkan pada zaman kegemilangannya dahulu.

Beliau berkata jika mereka mengekalkan corak permainan yang sama, sukan badminton negara akan jauh ketinggalan.

"Ketika zaman saya, tiada kemudahan seperti yang ada hari ini. Biasanya, kami berlatih atas usaha kami sendiri kecuali jika ada kejohanan. Jika tidak, kami akan berlatih sesama sendiri.

"Sekarang, pemain muda bertuah, mereka ada kemudahan dan perlu menggunakannya sebaik mungkin," katanya kepada pemberita pada majlis sambutan ulang tahun kelahirannya yang ke-80, di sini malam ini.

Turut hadir, Presiden Persatuan Badminton Malaysia (BAM) Tan Sri Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff dan beberapa bekas pemain badminton kebangsaan iaitu Datuk Yew Cheng Hoe, Tan Aik Huang, Datuk Tan Yee Khan, Datuk Ng Boon Bee dan Datuk Billy Ng.

Teh berkata sebagai seorang pemain mereka perlu bersiap sedia sepenuhnya sebelum menghadapi sebarang kejohanan.

"Jika tidak bersedia, mereka tidak perlu menyertainya kerana ia akan memberi kesan kepada pemain itu sendiri," katanya.

Legenda badminton negara kelahiran Pulau Pinang itu telah memenangi kejohanan All England dan merupakan ketua pasukan Piala Thomas Malaysia sebanyak tiga kali, selain memenangi beberapa kejohanan tempatan dan antarabangsa.
