As the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism minister, Datuk Hasan Malek says he has warned Suria KLCC over moves to sideline local franchises in favour of foreign luxury brands. – The Malaysian Insider pic, February 20, 2015.The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism ministry is checking if there are any allocations in the law that would enable action to be taken against Suria KLCC for ordering tenants of local brands to move from prime locations to other areas in the mall, said its minister Datuk Hasan Malek.Hasan said he has ordered his secretary-general Datuk Seri Alias Ahmad to conduct a study into the matter and see if there was any breach of contract between the internationally-acclaimed mall and its tenant.Utusan Malaysia quoted him as saying that the ministry was disappointed with Suria KLCC's actions as he himself had privately advised the mall's management not to harass local traders and to empower local brands. He said that the matter of national interests has to be given priority over profits, adding that he will call KLCC's management in for an explanation."It looks like KLCC has not heeded my advice. Why did they do such a thing? Don't think of just making profits."What more when their actions seem to be going against the 'Buy Malaysian Goods' campaign that was implemented by the ministry."Although they have given the excuse that Suria KLCC is based on the business to business (B2B) principle, but they have to have the responsibility to carry out the aspirations of the campaign," he said.On Wednesday, Malaysia's premium fashion brand BritishIndia said it was suing Suria KLCC for forcing it to move from its current prime location to another spot in the mall. The store's founder, Pat Liew, said in a statement that the order to move was served in July last year, where they were given four days to accept unconditionally the mall's relocation offer.
Suria KLCC is the high-end mall which is part of the Petronas Twin Towers complex in downtown Kuala Lumpur. – February 20, 2015.BritishIndia has more than 40 stores, including 20 plus outlets in leading malls in Singapore, Thailand and Philippines. In response to the report, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamalauddin said yesterday that he had heard of similar complaints from other local traders in the mall since a few years ago."I was chairman of Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad (PUNB). I have received many complaints from local entrepreneurs that were sidelined by Suria KLCC management."These entrepreneurs are not asking that their rentals be free. They are willing to pay the high rentals. But since they do not sell international brands, Suria KLCC does not even look at them," he said. – February 20, 2015.
